Ethnic Minorities in Longsheng

Besides terraced rice fields, the various customs and rich cultures of ethnic minorities in Longsheng also attract visitors.

In Longsheng there are more than ten ethnic groups, including Dong, Han, Zhuang, Yao, Miao and some others. These groups differ from one another in clothing styles, eating habits, dwellings, festivals and customs. Among the minority nationalities, Zhuang and Yao people are more frequently seen in Longji Rice Terraces scenic area. They live in several famous ethnic villages such as Longji Ancient Zhuang Village, Jinzhu Zhuang Village and Huangluo Yao Village.

Located at the wayside to Ping'an parking lot, Huangluo Yao Village is well-known for it is listed in Guinness World Records as the "Village with Most People Having Long Hairs". It is said that all Yao women in the village only cut their hairs once in a lifetime, and there are three bunches of hair on their heads—one is the hair growing on their heads, one is the part cut off when they were 18 years old, and another is the lost part when they comb their hairs daily. The ethnic minorities are good at folk singing & dancing, they usually use various performances to welcome tourists who come to their villages. Visitors can see traditional costumes, experience unique customs and feel hospitality of the local ethnic groups.
